The Restoration of Vanguard, Stage One

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

The Restoration of Vanguard, Stage One marks the transformation of Vivisari Vexaria’s return from a matter of identity and memory into an organized campaign of reconstruction. Vanguard is not merely an old guild reopening its doors: it is the dormant institution that once shepherded the world through seven earth-rending Cataclysms, and its revival reconnects the present to a heroic order whose absence has lasted nearly a century. The stage-one quest gives that return a formal structure, while its reset tier, sealed vault, and extraordinary reward establish both the scale of what has been lost and the practical reasons to recover it.

Historical Background and the Guild’s Return

Vanguard’s significance is inseparable from the history preserved in Prismarche. The city’s Temple is a monumental white-stone structure with stained-glass windows depicting saints and heroes, including an image of Vivisari Vexaria and her Party of Heroes. A priest explains that, a hundred years earlier, the party defeated the seventh and final Cataclysm, though all of its members except the Sorceress perished. The victory ended an age in which the Rampant Genesis of the Flesh-Weaver, the Crimson Blight brought by the Reaper of the Lost Harvest, and the Great Conflagrations called down by the Ashen Hierophant had ravaged the world.

The centennial Peace Day Festival makes that history public and ceremonial. Prismarche’s inhabitants flood the streets to celebrate a hundred years of freedom from the Cataclysms, even though the younger generation has no firsthand memory of the horrors their predecessors survived. The festival therefore preserves the Party of Heroes as both historical actors and objects of reverence. Vanguard’s restoration belongs to the same movement of remembrance, but it is more material and more demanding: instead of displaying the past in a temple or festival, it attempts to recover the institution that helped make that peace possible.

The contrast between commemoration and reconstruction is central to the event. Peace Day treats the Cataclysms as a completed historical danger, while Master Aeris insists that catastrophe is never entirely absent from the horizon. The Dragon King might descend from the Sky-Pillar Range, an unknown horror might awaken from an ancient crypt, and another Shattered Oracle might emerge from reckless curiosity. His warning gives the restoration an urgency beyond nostalgia. The world celebrates the end of the seventh Cataclysm, yet its most experienced figures still understand safety as provisional.

The Opening of Vanguard’s Guildhall

The immediate turning point occurs when Vivisari Vexaria reaches the long-closed guildhall with Rafael. She uses an illusion to prevent observers from seeing the door being opened, then pulls at the handle. The guildhall yields. For Rafael, who has remained loyal to his former mistress and stewarded the dormant organization, the opening is a momentous confirmation that the woman before him is truly Vivisari Vexaria rather than an illusionist impersonating the Sorceress. Vivisari herself feels the force of the moment in her quickened pulse and excitement.

The building’s interior reinforces Vanguard’s former importance. It is larger inside than outside, not because of Vivisari’s personal wards but because guilds in Seven Cataclysms naturally expand internally when their tier rises. This architectural rule reflects the game-derived organization of the world: a guild can retain a modest external building while acquiring the capacity to house a far larger community. Vanguard’s current condition is therefore legible in the building itself. Its dormant history survives, but its functional status must be restored.

The reopening also brings a complicated inheritance. The guildhall is not an empty shell; it contains offices, records, and the possibility of recovering an institutional charter. Rafael immediately proposes examining the charter in the steward’s office to determine what has happened. His response is energetic rather than ceremonial. Once Vivisari’s identity is established, he resumes his role as her loyal steward, and the old relationship becomes operational again: the return of Vanguard requires administration, investigation, and decisions, not merely recognition.

The System-Granted Mythic Quest

The formal beginning of Stage One appears on a parchment pinned to a corkboard as a Mythic Quest titled “The Restoration of Vanguard, Stage One.” Its wording presents Vanguard as a noble organization that shepherded the world through seven Cataclysms, then lay dormant for nearly one hundred years with its treasures lost alongside it. The quest does not promise that everything can be recovered. Instead, it distinguishes between what has been lost and what has been broken, suggesting that the latter may still be forged anew.

The first stated objective is to progress the guild tier from zero to one. This reset is not a minor administrative inconvenience. It means that Vanguard’s present standing no longer reflects its historic reputation, and that the revived organization must begin again at the lowest available tier. The second objective is to regain access to the Craftsmen Quarters, an area that remains locked while the guild is in its diminished state. Restoration therefore proceeds through infrastructure: the guild must recover its productive capacity before its older power can become usable again.

The quest’s reward changes the scale of the undertaking. One item harvested from the Umbral Regent will be reforged into a level-2000 relic with no level requirement. Rafael identifies the notice as a System-granted quest rated mythic. Vivisari initially judges the stated task—finding one craftsman and advancing a single guild tier—as apparently modest, but Rafael recognizes that the reward is significant and may indicate that later stages will offer comparable recompense. The phrase “stage one” turns the parchment into a promise of escalation: this is only the first release of a larger restoration sequence.

The reward also links Vanguard’s institutional revival to the defeat of the Umbral Regent. An object taken from that enemy is not simply retained as spoils; it is transformed through the restoration process into a relic whose immense level carries no normal level restriction. The quest thus converts past victory into future capability. Vanguard’s resurrection is funded by the history of battles already won, while the resulting relic may help prepare the guild for dangers that have not yet appeared.

Obstacles, Resources, and Strategic Stakes

The most immediate obstacle is the inaccessible vault. Rafael reports that the vault cannot be entered, and Vivisari is visibly displeased because it contains the organization’s immense stores of valuables. The loss is especially sharp because the guildhall itself has reopened while the treasury remains barred. The restoration begins with partial access: the institution is present, its steward is active, and its quest system is functioning, but its accumulated wealth cannot yet be used.

Rafael nevertheless treats the restriction as potentially worthwhile because the quest rewards may outweigh the temporary loss. He suspects that the vault may reopen once Vanguard reaches the appropriate tier, though neither he nor Vivisari can confirm that this will happen. Their uncertainty is important. The quest offers a path forward, but it does not provide full transparency about the restored guild’s rules or eventual privileges. Progress must be made before the benefits of progress can be tested.

The event’s surrounding circumstances show why powerful resources matter. On the Emberblade Plains, a convoy is derailed across a vivid field of yellow, orange, and red grass; dozens of carriages lie overturned, the front section having slid at least two hundred feet while the rear cargo and passenger cars remain connected to the track. The wreck raises immediate questions about fatalities because ordinary passengers lack the defensive artifacts, protective enchantments, and enhanced constitution available to adventurers. Saffra’s decision to dilute the Phoenix Blood Elixir for an injured survivor, and the group’s conclusion that her defenses have made her functionally invulnerable, further demonstrate the uneven distribution of protection in this world.

The convoy’s defensive power cores make the same point at an institutional level. Two cores are deactivated while the remaining six brighten, and the group determines that all but one can be spared while preserving the defensive enchantments. A single core can sustain a barrier strong enough to resist Titled-rank monsters, yet the convoy must still ration those cores to keep the Ghul-Feather focused on the engine car. Vanguard’s restoration enters a world where survival depends on scarce, specialized systems. Recovering craftsmen, vaults, relics, and guild capacity is therefore not abstract world-building; it addresses the material fragility exposed by every catastrophe.

Consequences and Narrative Significance

The reopening of Vanguard’s guildhall gives Vivisari Vexaria a base from which her return can acquire continuity. Before this point, her existence is filtered through temple imagery, century-old accounts, festivals, and shocked recognitions. After the door opens, the past becomes an institution capable of issuing tasks, preserving records, and generating rewards. Rafael’s immediate return to stewardship supplies the restoration with a human administrative link to the guild’s former life.

The event also reframes Vivisari’s power. Later, after she casually tears a Greater Voidbeast apart, observers are unlikely to interpret the spectacle as merely the return of the Sorceress. They may instead assume that a god has appeared, because even a legend such as Vivisari could not be expected to destroy a Cataclysm with such ease. Vanguard’s restoration develops against this altered scale of perception: the guild is rebuilding from tier zero while its returning founder may already exceed the limits that once defined the world’s greatest Cataclysm Monarchs.

That imbalance creates both an advantage and a problem. Vivisari’s overwhelming strength can simplify the immediate question of Vanguard’s return by making her identity undeniable, yet the guild itself remains institutionally weak. Its vault is inaccessible, its tier has been reset, and its Craftsmen Quarters are locked. The restoration therefore separates personal power from collective capacity. Vivisari can resolve threats directly, but Vanguard must regain the structures that allow an organization to preserve, manufacture, and distribute power beyond one extraordinary individual.

The event ends not with the restoration completed but with its first actionable commitment. Rafael and Vivisari agree that the charter and the guild’s records are the proper starting points, and Rafael turns toward discovering what happened during the century of dormancy. Vivisari then leaves him to the investigation, teleporting away while he refocuses on his mission. Stage One consequently establishes a forward-moving framework rather than a final triumph: the guild has awakened, the System has named its work, and the inaccessible inheritance of Vanguard has become the objective of a continuing campaign.
